Homeschool WEEK 8 Recap: The LETTER H

*** Read this post for more information on our homeschool philosophy and approach to learning.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18th

MALACHI -- H is for Hippopotamus

> Letter Journal: Practice writing the letter "H" in journal

> Video: "All About Hippos for Kids" by Free School (YouTube)

> Hippo paper bag puppet craft

> Video: "Spy In The Wild: The 'Beauty' Regime of Hippos" by BBC Earth Kids (YouTube) to learn more about hippos' natural habitat

> Occupational Therapy (fine motor) exercises: "POKE-A-DOT: "The Wheels on the Bus - Wild Safari" by Melissa & Doug Children's Books (These books are fantastic for helping develop a strong pointer finger and steady "poke," a skill necessary for Malachi's use to his "AAC" assistive communication device)

> Occupational Therapy exercises: Hippo cutting skills practice worksheet (Find link on Pinterest here)

> Reading (Poetry): Hippo poem excerpt from Eric Carle's book "Animals Animals" (followed by discussion about the imagery of the illustrated hippo accompanying the poem, including colors and body descriptors, as language practice using Malachi's AAC communication device)

> Art: Watercolor painting of hippo in the "style" of Eric Carle

> Letter Journal: Practice writing name to finish "desk work"

Medical Appointments: ENT Appointment for MALACHI at Seattle Children's Hospital

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19th

Outing: Forest School Tuesday

The boys will both be participating in a Forest School program for two hours every Tuesday morning. They are part of a large group of kids and will spend the time learning about nature and engaging in unstructured play.

> Project: Planting succulents!

Online Group: Drum Circle

The boys have long participated in a weekly online drumming class with Drum to LEARN, a nonprofit organization. The instructor is a child development specialist who combines lessons in music and rhythm with social and emotional learning and literacy.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20th

> Letter Journal: Practice writing the letter "H" in journal

> Book: "The Home Builders" by Varsha Bajaj (incorporating AAC language communication practice of "core words" such as "in" "out" "up" "down" etc.)

> Outing: Christmas shopping to Almond Roca Outlet and Tacoma Mall with great opportunities for Malachi to practice independently navigating public spaces with his wheelchair

> Event: "Fix-It Fair" at Lacey (WA) Maker Space -- Volunteers helped people "fix" broken household items. We registered for help fixing a little indoor floor wheelchair for Malachi.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21st

Outing: Baby Story Time!

On Thursdays, Malachi and I take Deacon to a Baby Story Time program at our local library. It is hugely beneficial for Deacon to engage in the singing and dancing and to play with his peer group. Malachi enjoys the stories, too.

> Library time to find and checkout books for the next two weeks of school

> Speech Therapy at Greenhouse Therapy in Olympia, WA for Malachi; plus, an Occupational Therapy evaluation coinciding with this week's speech session
