Adventures in Nature: Kopachuck State Park.

Park number NINE in our quest to visit all SIXTEEN Washington State Parks in our three-county region this spring! (That is: King, Pierce and Thurston counties in Western Washington)

On March 30th, my eight-year-old son Malachi and I packed up and headed across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to Kopachuck State Park in Gig Harbor, Washington (Pierce County).

We enjoyed this park. It was beautiful! (Everything on the peninsula is beautiful.) And we had ourselves a nice, little hike.

There is beach access. It is a rocky shoreline, directly on the Puget Sound.

Though, beach "access" does not necessarily mean "accessibility."

ADA/wheelchair "access" there is not.

Getting to the beach meant me carrying my son, out of his chair, leaving his wheels and medical equipment on the trail.

It is not ideal, especially for public lands access, but luckily, he is still small enough for me to make it happen from a physical standpoint. One of these days that will not be the case.
